"Verne concern"

Films: Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

Alias: Bioluminescent birds, giant piranha, Elasmosaurus, Giganotosaurus

Type: Ancient

Location: Underground/Cave/Ocean/Desert

Height/Weight: Ranges from that of average sparrows to that of small buildings.

Affiliation: Neutral

Summary: The concept that there is a world deep below where the Earth's core should be...is impossible. There's no dancing around that simple fact. But it never hurts to try and look regardless. And you know, maybe ol' Jules wasn't as crazy as his writings would have you believe...

History: A while ago, the Snaefellsjokull volcano in Iceland was visited by Vernians, a group of people who believed that the works of Jules Verne was not science fiction, but fact. Alas, they never returned from their venture. But one explorer's son and some other friends are about to follow in their footsteps. And soon, they will find out the truth of the center of the Earth. It's quite something, in summary.

Notable Kills: None.

Final Fate: The group leaves the center the same as they saw it. Whomever may try to get in there again is probably going to notice a few dead plants and one really dead Giganotosaurus. They do bring back one of the glowing birds from there, but it flies off.

Powers/Abilities: None.

Weakness: Anything conventional.

Scariness Factor: 2.5-While some of the creatures are admittingly a bit freaky (the piranha and the plants instantly come to mind), the CGI is a bit below average for a theatrical production. I mean, come on! I've seen similar effects in the "Spy Kids" movies! Then again, this film was made when Brenden Frasier was atom-bombing his own career with one bad film after another, so we probably should have expected not much effort.

Trivia: -The small fish bear an uncanny resemblance to Xiphactinus, a large Cretaceous species of fang-toothed fish that was once incorrectly labeled Unicerosaurus, and was made the state fossil of Kansas in 2010.

- Snaefellsjokull means "snow-fell glacier", and is a real extinct stratovolcano in Iceland. It is THE mountain leading to the lost world in the original novel, which has made it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.
